Next week we welcome health statisticians and planners from Ghana to a bespoke 5 day workshop on population modelling and mapping for health, hosted by the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton as part of our Countdown to 2030 project. Participants from the University of Ghana, the Ghana Health Service and Ministry of Health will take part in an intensive series of seminars covering the reliable use of computational and geospatial analysis tools (e.g. QGIS and R programming) to estimate population sizes by age and sex.
Achieving reliable estimates of health service indicators (for example the proportion of a population receiving services in a timely manner) at regional and district levels is vital for planning and decision making. In this workshop key people involved in health planning and education in Ghana will gain the skills required to enable them to perform more in-depth analysis in their home country – and pass these skills onto their colleagues.
