Build a Population Map with LEGO at the Southampton Science & Engineering Festival

What can LEGO® bricks tell us about the world’s population? Quite a lot, it turns out.

The Southampton Science & Engineering Festival (SOTSEF) is a free public event where scientists, engineers and researchers share fun, hands-on activities that show how science and technology shape our everyday lives. It’s designed especially for young people and families who want to explore, experiment and discover new ideas.

At this year’s festival, the WorldPop team will be running an interactive activity where visitors can become population scientists for the day.

Younger visitors can build colourful maps using LEGO boards and minifigures – and if you’re ready for more of a challenge, you can also try estimating the population of a village using satellite images.

These activities show how geography, data and mapping help scientists understand where people live and how communities plan things like schools, healthcare and other important services.

Come along, get hands-on with LEGO, and see how data can help us understand the world.
