Dr Gianluca Boo
Gianluca is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the WorldPop research team. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Zurich, an MSc and BSc in Geography from the University of Lausanne, and a postgraduate certificate in GIScience from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He previously served as a Senior Data Expert at the Small Arms Survey, Geneva Graduate Institute, working on data-driven analyses of small arms proliferation and armed violence. He also was a Senior Enterprise Fellow at WorldPop, leading statistical modelling for high-resolution population mapping in sub‑Saharan Africa. His research integrates demographic and geospatial data through Bayesian statistical models to produce population estimates in data-scarce contexts, informing public health, development, and humanitarian planning.
