Mapping India’s child health and development

WorldPop have recently completed a unique and innovative interactive online health map for India to support the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) project. Our team of statistical modellers, data analysts, GIS technicians and application developers was assembled in early 2021 under the leadership of survey data expert and Senior Enterprise Fellow Dr Carla Pezzulo.

During the 18 months of the project the team collected, processed and mapped recent children’s and women’s health and development indicators at state and district level. A range of over 30 indicators, extracted from NFHS-4, NFHS-5 and other household surveys along with air quality, nightlights and gridded population data were analysed.

The aim was to provide robust, accurate and granular geospatial visualisations of recent survey data to aid CIFF’s on-going review of their work supporting child health and development in India. The result is a unique and rich evidence base documenting the state of children’s and women’s health and development across India.

An online interactive atlas presenting maps for all indicators as well as comparisons of NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 data can be accessed online.

Academic papers are currently in preparation, and the team are currently preparing a new project to support CIFF’s work in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, as well as India.
